Why I am interested in T5

Because Marc really is in the driver's seat this time.

MT was the last real hurrah. TNE had no Marc at all. T4 was a bunch of big-name game designers who had never really done Traveller before (and it showed). GT is well, a different system. T20 is the same problem in reverse. T5 is all Marc.

I really don't care when it comes out, as long as he's happy with it.

I agree, Don.  I'm excited about it.  

(I liked the freebies he gave out for pre-ordering the T5 CD, too. Especially the "planet card" - those could be made into collectable cards and maybe take advantage of that phenomenon and maybe attract younger players.  "Hey, what are these cool sci-fi cards?"  :)

T4 was completely Marc's whether you liked it or not. Lester Smith and most of the other people involved in T4 started in the business developing Traveller products.

T5 is 100% Marc, with no dilution. Frankly, without a talented editor I fear for the book, even though I ordered it.

I hgave to admit I am as much worried as I am excited (too strong a word maybe) about it coming out. The lack of a professional editor plays a part of that as well as the whole "hope Marc likes it" thing. I don't know Marc personally but from stories and common aquaintances , I get the impression that Marc is a bit of a perfectionist and wants his material to be just so-so. Which is good mind you! However I think this may lead to him polishing and editing this thing into something no one will like and the worse case would be he edits and edits till he hates it then decides to toss out all the edits and goes back to square one. Then we get to sit on our hands another 4 or 5 years waiting for things to happen all over again.  Regardless, Marc needs one of those mythical/magical editors we all wish we could have that can look at what we are writing and because they know the direction as well as we do they can put it all together with ease since we are hung up not seeng the forrest for the trees.

e-mail from Marc earlier today. The text of the e-mail is as follows:

T5 Progress Report March 1, 2008

I wanted to update everyone on the progress on the T5 CD ROM.

First, I am so very gratified by your responses and support as we move toward completion of this project. In response to my earlier emails about delays, the overwhelming answer was… “get it right, we want to see a good project.”

I am sorry to announce we face another delay. I think that the disks I would send out this weekend would not be as satisfying as I could make them. Our revised ship date is the end of March.

As always, we offer a full refund on demand. Tell us you don’t want to wait, and we’ll refund your payment immediately. And I continue to thank you all for your support.

** If you have not received your bonus pack, something has gone wrong. Tell me by return mail and I’ll send a replacement immediately.

Thanks for your patience. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your support.

More news from Marc today via Hunter from CotI,

"...looks like it's not going to be finished for the 1st of April. Marc is taking the comments of the fans and his playtesters to heart and trying to make the book as complete and stable as possible before releasing it. The book is farther along than it has ever been.

Marc usually tries to send out a monthly email update on the progress, but he's swamped right now trying to get it out and deal with some other stuff so there might not be an email this month.

Bottom line is the expected release date has been pushed back to the end of April. If anyone has preordered and wishes a refund, all you've got to do is drop Marc an email and let him know."
