I agree, Don. I'm excited about it.

(I liked the freebies he gave out for pre-ordering the T5 CD, too.
Especially the "planet card" - those could be made into collectable cards
and maybe take advantage of that phenomenon and maybe attract younger
players. "Hey, what are these cool sci-fi cards?" :)

Re: Why I am interested in T5

T4 was completely Marc's whether you liked it or not. Lester Smith and most of the other people involved in T4 started in the business developing Traveller products.

T5 is 100% Marc, with no dilution. The lack of a professional editor plays a part of that as well as the whole "hope Marc likes it" thing. I don't know Marc personally but from stories and common aquaintances , I get the impression that Marc is a bit of a perfectionist and wants his material to be just so-so. Which is good mind you! However I think this may lead to him polishing and editing this thing into something no one will like and the worse case would be he edits and edits till he hates it then decides to toss out all the edits and goes back to square one. Then we get to sit on our hands another 4 or 5 years waiting for things to happen all over again. Regardless, Marc needs one of those mythical/magical editors we all wish we could have that can look at what we are writing and because they know the direction as well as we do they can put it all together with ease since we are hung up not seeng the forrest for the trees.

Jerry

IMTU:JR Mapes
0309 C38A975-D S tc++(**) ru+ tm+ !tn t4 tg- t20 !rtt ?t5 ge+ 3i++ c+ jt- au ls+ pi+ ta- he+ kk+ hi++ as++ va dr so+ zh da++ vi+ 633

He was supposed to be here already...

did anyone bother to find out WHY T5 was delayed?

Ross Winn
freelance geek

Re: He was supposed to be here already...

e-mail from Marc earlier today. I wanted to update everyone on the progress on the T5 CD ROM.

First, I am so very gratified by your responses and support as we move
toward completion of this project. In response to my earlier emails
about delays, the overwhelming answer was… “get it right, we want to
see a good project.”

I am sorry to announce we face another delay. I think that the disks I
would send out this weekend would not be as satisfying as I could make
them. Our revised ship date is the end of March.

As always, we offer a full refund on demand. Tell us you don’t want to
wait, and we’ll refund your payment immediately. And I continue to
thank you all for your support.

** If you have not received your bonus pack, something has gone wrong.
Tell me by return mail and I’ll send a replacement immediately.

Thanks for your patience. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate your support.

_____________________
IMTU:JR Mapes
0309 C38A975-D S tc++(**) ru+ tm+ !tn t4 tg- t20 !rtt ?t5 ge+ 3i++ c+ jt- au ls+ pi+ ta- he+ kk+ hi++ as++ va dr so+ zh da++ vi+ 633

Re: He was supposed to be here already...

Is this really an answer? finished for the 1st of April. Marc is taking the comments of the fans
and his playtesters to heart and trying to make the book as complete
and stable as possible before releasing it. The book is farther along
than it has ever been.

Marc usually tries to send out a monthly email update on the progress,
but he's swamped right now trying to get it out and deal with some
other stuff so there might not be an email this month.

Bottom line is the expected release date has been pushed back to the

Bio:

Mark grew up around starships. His family ran a restaurant in Regina
Starport. He spent his days reading as many starship technical manuals
he could get his hands on (in between helping his folks run the eatery),
and, on his 18th birthday in 1227, left home and signed about the
subsidized merchant, "Intrepid Pedagogue."

Normally, life on a sub is about as exciting as watching Hivers mate, but
things in the Regency made things more colorful. Deteriorating Regency
policies were wrecking havoc on the profits of many a free trader in the
former Domain. Mark got injured during a Regency Customs inspection when
one of the inspectors accidently mistook a pressure tank for a smuggling
compartment (because the tank looked "non-standard"). Ignoring Mark and
the other crewmembers' protest, the inspector had an explosive placed on
the tank. The inspector was killed and Mark was badly hit with shrapnel
and hot radioactive steam. With the aid of retroviruses and cloned skin
grafts, Mark recovered.

The rebellions on many worlds (as well as the systematic squashing of
these rebellions by Regency loyalists) made red zones out of the most
stable systems in the past 100 years. The Pedagogue made quite a few
paramilitary support runs - usually in favor of the Regency (they had the
money). News, as well, as personal witnessing, of the atrocities Regency
(now called Imperial Regency) forces were heaping on the rebel worlds,
caused the Pedagogue crew to switch sides. The following years into 1240
were spent running supplies to worlds that would later join the League of
Spinward States.

When Regina made its separation from the IR in 1232, the Pedagogue's crew
supported it....mostly. The few who didn't left at the next port of call.

On 137-1242, the Pedagogue was attacked and couldn't get away. IR
forces, in the form of patrol cruisers, captured the fat trader and Mark
was headed to an internment camp deep in IR territory. On the way,
however, Mark escaped from his cell by a fellow prisoner who managed to
slip out and crack the ship's computer's security to release the sub-
craft while the cruiser was refueling at a gas giant. Most of the
prisoners (a few captured from other ships) came with him. By piloting
deep within the planet's thick atmosphere, he evaded the cruiser and hid
for as long as he could before life support got critical. He then made
it to the main world, sold the craft, divvied the money among the
captives, and signed aboard the Far Trader "Argent Dawn."

When Avery's call for his campaign against the Dominate came, some of the
crew of the Dawn were willing to respond. Mark wasn't. He was a trader;
besides, with what the IR has been stirring up, there was plenty of
excitement here. Mark had an investment as well. He used his portion of
the loot to buy quite a few of the Dawn's shares.

The last four years were spent trading among the various worlds in the
LSS. At this time, 001-1248, Mark's captain told him that he was
retiring. He made his pile and was going back to his home on Emerald
(1006/Spinward Marches). The captain sold the ship to Regina Shipyards.
Mark imedieatly purchased it back with the share chits he had obtained
plus financing the rest. Since the ship was already a few decades old
thus the price reduced, the remaining 29% of the value was a very
reasonable deal for a 40-year plan. Mark hopes to pay it all off long
before that.

Mark is looking for a new crew, for the others have moved on. He has 71%
of the ship in his name. The 1276th Bank of Regina has the rest. One
day, he will pay off the mortgage and the ship will really be his. Now,
to find a new crew......

Bio:

Sigrun, whose name means "victory" in her native Icelandic, is a typical
member of her planet in the Sword Worlds Confederation (a member of the
League of Spinward States during the present time): tall, fair, and
proud. Her father is a Narsilian Jarl, who kept his authority even
during the days when the Sword Worlds were leaned on by the Imperial
Regency. Her father was one of the Sword Worlds leaders that directed
the rebellions of former Sword Worlds and Border Worlds (now called The
Metal Worlds, also in the L.S.S.) against the I.R. and helped the
Darrians forge the L.S.S.. When Sigrun was 18, she felt obligated to
join Flota- Þjálfun Stofnun - The Naval Training Academy of Narsil. She
focused on getting her certification in Astrogation. She graduated with
honors with the class of '39 and became an Ensign in Sjóher af Narsil....

When Avery made his Call to arms in 1243, the L.S.S. responded. It was
all voluntary; no fleet was obligated to join. The Sword Worlds and
Metal worlds did, among others in the L.S.S., The Republic of Regina,
even the thrice-cursed Imperial Regency. No matter the outcome, this
campaign promised to be one grand trip to Valhalla...

During the last days of the fighting during the Second Battle of Gateway
in 1247, the situation looked completely hopeless. The captain of
Sigrun's ship ship allowed the Lucan Virus to infect his ship for the
final desperate assault. The ship jumped into the Gateway system and
participated in the biggest naval battle in Post-Ancient Era history.

Her ship was nearly destroyed, but it barely held - even after the bridge
took a direct hit. Her captain was trapped under her Astrogation
console, however. Ignoring the carnage and risk of being left behind by
the crew abandoning ship, she managed to pull off the wreckage from on
top of the Captain, saving his life. Sigrun, along with the Captain and
the pilot, managed to obtain jet packs. They tied themselves together
and the pilot manuvered the jetpack away from the wreckage. The Captain
activated an Emergency Radio Beacon as they watched Lucan's Flagship make
its plummet directly into the Gateway Station itself. The explosions and
disarrayed Dominate forces was a thing to see. Eventually, they were
retrieved by a surviving Zhodani missile cruiser as it was preparing to
jump out to the rendezvous point.

It was many more weeks before she saw the stars of home again. Finally,
she was back on Narsil. She received the Medal for Conspicuous Gallantry
for her actions at the SBOG (and, more importantly, surviving it!).

Sigrun was tapped out after the Battle. She felt she needed a change of
pace. She resigned her commission - to her father's protests. She did
know that she could control her own hlutskipti (destiny). Her father
hoped she would stay so she could marry the one that would take his
place. She had other thoughts. She said goodbye to her family and
booked working passage that led her into Regina space.

As for now, she is restless. She picked up the traveling bug from her
Navy career. There was something about crewing on tramp freighters that
appealed to her. She is hoping to sign on as a permanent crewmember on
one. There is a man named Admag who is calling for people to help crew
his far trader, the "Argent Dawn." Maybe he needs a real
Astrogator........

Bio:

Iiku (sometimes called "Eek!!" by others wishing for an early death) was
always a punk.

He was caught being part of a street gang running the streets of Garakii
City on Falmmarion by the local authorities. He was given a choice:
Military Service or Prison.

After he enlisted in the Imperial Regency Naval Service, Iiku found new
opportunities to practice his knife skills - in illegal fights with
fellow spacers. He raked in many a credit from the betting. Enough of
the crew, including the Ship Command and Staff Officers, were involved
with the sport, so a blind eye was turned to it. The fact that nobody
got killed was also a factor.

Between the fights, IIku served in the destroyer's Engine Room. His
ship, the IRS Lingering Wrath, served in the IR's rear line - policing
space lanes for pirates, smugglers, and rebellious
factions.

In 1241, however, a few changes happened.

During one of Iiku's fights, a fellow spacer got killed during the
match. The spacer was the daughter of a Regency Admiral/Governor. An
investigation was ordered, and everyone utilized their rump-covering
skills as best as they could. An investigation, however, uncovered the
"game" and the Captain and her staff were executed for the dishonor.
Iiku played himself as the "unwitting pawn" for the whole affair. He was
cleared of any homicide charges, but a court-marshal still happened.
Iiku was sentenced to 6 years in a Regency Military Prison for "Conduct
Unbecoming for a Regency Spacer."

Well, as for Iiku's prison life, we will leave it up to the reader's
imagination to figure out how he picked up his Liaison skill. You might
ask his fellow prisoners, especially Bubba. Bubba was quite fond of Iiku
- especially because Bubba was twice as massive as Iiku. Stabbing Bubba
with a prison shiv would only make him angry. Check, in your computer's
Library Data, about the prison term of "Tossing The Salad."

He is newly out of prison, an experience he doesn't want to repeat. He
knows he has to change his life, but he is not sure how. He did manage,
through the prison education system, to get certification in
Engineering. Maybe he should start taking that seriously. He booked
passage on the fastest ship out of Regency space. It dropped him on
Regina. Now, to find work......

When Avery's call for his campaign against the Dominate came, some of the
crew of the Dawn were willing to respond. Mark wasn't. He was a trader;
besides, with what the IR has been stirring up, there was plenty of
excitement here.
